A hybrid car has a gas engine and an electric motor. The motor gets you moving and helps when you speed up; the engine takes over at cruising speed. When you brake, the wheels drive the motor, which works as a generator to recharge the battery. The engine tops it up too, so a regular hybrid never needs plugging in.
